Belly Up Small Business of the Year

It’s a big year for the Belly Up in Solana Beach, which was recently named the 78th Assembly District’s 2015 Small Business of the Year. California Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins honors stellar businesses in her district each year, according to the San Diego U-T. This year, she had high praise for co-owners Phil Berkovitz and Steve Goldberg for their hard work and vision. The Belly Up, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, has welcomed an extraordinary number of renowned acts including The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett, Maroon 5 and Willie Nelson. As the U-T notes, Dave Hodges founded the Belly Up in 1974, and Goldberg of Rancho Santa Fe purchased the venue with partner Berkovitz in 2003. BellyUp.com

Carmel Valley 5K gets a Thumbs Up

Carmel Valley’s fourth annual 5K recently got a thumbs up from the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board for a Jan. 24, 2016 start. The Del Mar Times reports that last year’s 5K successfully raised $40,000 in donations for local schools, bringing total community donations in terms of proceeds from the race to $100,000. The 2016 race course will start at Canyon Crest Academy, cruise along the new Manzanita trail and then along Carmel Valley Road. Instead of taking place on a Saturday, as in previous years, this year’s race will take place on a Sunday to help reduce potential traffic issues. The Bay Club Bash will feature bounce houses, live local music, dance performances and a silent auction. CarmelValley5K.com
