Sneak Peak: Del Mar's KAABOO 2

Up Close with Founder Bryan Gordon

What began as an inspired idea after a long night around a Del Mar hotel fire pit with like-minded friends  – a few beers and some tequila shots may have been involved – has transformed into the region’s biggest and sparkliest new music draw. Enter KAABOO.

From that casual late night gathering, an idea for a unique music festival emerged that will transcend all others. KAABOO will make its debut over the course of three exciting days from Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20, and promises to go the extra mile when delivering a coastal cornucopia of sights, sounds and “mix-periences” that will truly intoxicate the senses.

To be held at the Del Mar Racetracks and Fairgrounds, KAABOO will offer incredible entertainment by some of the best in the music business, mouth-watering foods and some top-notch experiences that guarantee this event will become an annual destination of mind, body and spirit. Does that sound like a lot? It is a lot.

When you first arrive, if you sense an exciting, imaginative, creative and upbeat ambiance, then please don’t waver from that conclusion. Two years in the making, founder and entrepreneur Bryan Gordon can barely contain his enthusiasm when it comes to welcoming folks of all ages to this grand musical affair.

“We have created a whole weekend of exploration, discovery and fun,” Gordon says. “It will be unlike any other festival in terms of all the experiences we offer along with the refined quality of services, and the San Diego area is a perfect place for this event because of the great weather, great people and fun vibe.”

While the 100+ performers slated across seven stages at KAABOO that will include No Doubt, The Killers and the Zac Brown Band (VIP pass holders will be treated to a special Thursday night performance by Ed Kowalcyzk, opening for Sheryl Crow), the 350 acres comprising the race track and fair grounds will host multiple outdoor and indoor attractions atypical of most music festivals. Its prime location makes it easy to access local bars and eateries, like the Brigantine, Pacifica Del Mar, Agave del Mar, or En Fuego Cantina. And of course, the beach is directly across the street should you opt for a mid-festival ocean plunge.

Among the premier attractions will be the Humor Me Comedy Club, a Vegas-style club with indoor seating, air conditioning and a front-facing stage. A contemporary art fair staged throughout the venue will feature the work of more than 80 contemporary artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, installation artists and jewelry designers who have been hand-selected and curated from a nationwide pool. Additionally, KAABOO will offer Artwork, an indoor arts showcase.

And what’s a great festival without food? Guests can enjoy everything from a high-end healthy food court to food trucks, along with 18 local restaurateurs serving samples. Further, this scrumptious fare can be artfully paired with a wide variety of wines, craft beers, spirits and cocktails.

“Whatever drink you can imagine can most likely be served at KAABOO,” Gordon says.

Local restaurants in the Del Mar/Carmel Valley area supporting the festival include Searsucker, Cucina Enoteca, Agave Del Mar, Poseidon at the Beach, Pamplemousse, Kitchen 1540 – L’Auberge, and Ruth’s Chris in Del Mar.

KAABOO is just the kind of experience in which you can simultaneously lose yourself and find yourself. Get your tickets now, since organizers are expecting a full house.

“We anticipate that this will be the beginning of a very long and exciting run for the festival,” Gordon says. “And I am blessed to have a team of amazing and experienced professionals who have done so much to make it happen.”
