Waving Goodbye to Summer
Clinging tightly to the final weeks of summer break, or ready to get those kids back in school? Whichever it is, Del Mar and the surrounding North County offer fun ways to fill those remaining days.
The Cool Lagoon
Get the kids on a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, pedal boat or aqua cycle – or power up the family with a Wave Runner rental at the Carlsbad Lagoon. Older kids can cruise the blue with wake boarding, water skiing or tubing lessons.
Salutations to the Sun
If it’s been a frantic summer filled with activities, re-center with some yoga by the sea. Adults and kids 10 and older can do sun salutations on the sand with Valerie from Yoga Six on Sundays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the beach between the 18th and 19th Street entrances. For little yogis, or those who find balancing on the sand too challenging, The San Dieguito River Park offers outdoor yoga by the lagoon for all ages on Sunday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Gather some friends for a small picnic or round up your neighborhood for an all-day barbecue bash at one of the great North County Parks. If you can’t pull yourself away from the beach, Powerhouse Park combines a playground, large grassy area for picnics, with the beach a few steps away. San Dieguito County Park boasts an expansive, dog-friendly park with basketball courts, baseball fields, trails, duck ponds, playgrounds and barbecues. Up north, Carlsbad Aviara Community Park, provides multiple play areas, plus a baseball field and basketball courts, with barbecue areas that can be reserved.
You can also explore the new Encinitas Community Park complete with play areas, skate park, dog park, soccer fields and baseball/softball fields.
Pack their hiking gear and lunch for a day in the wilderness at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
Explore the trails and practice animal tracking skills, visit the museum or join the interpretive walk – then head down by the calmer north side surf for a picnic lunch.
At the San Diego Botanic Gardens, the kiddos can go on a scavenger hunt in Hamilton Children’s Garden, find adventure in Toni’s Tree House, play in the dirt, build a fort, play music, observe birds and butterflies, build a boat, and find their way out of a maze.
Entice them to earn prizes for hiking as part of the TRACK Trails: Kids in the Park program at San Elijo Lagoon. Wee ones can enjoy story time and a “surprise” on the third Tuesdays and Thursdays of the month, at 11 a.m.
Escape the Sun: Book it to the Library
The Del Mar Library’s various events can fill the final summer days. If your kids like story time, science, magic, knitting, puzzles, chess, music, crafts, or dogs, you will find an event for them.
Summer with the Stars
Take in a film al fresco! Up will be shown at Carmel Mountain Ranch Park on Aug. 8, and Cinderella on Aug. 15 at Carmel Valley Park as part of the county’s Summer Movies in the Park series.
The night sky’s main summer event is the Perseids Meteor shower. Oakoasis Preserve is hosting a Meteor Watchers event on Aug. 8 from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Let the young stargazers stay up late for this show and bring coats, blankets, and cocoa to keep them warm.
Give Back in the Great Outdoors
Kids will develop community pride as they help preserve natural and cultural treasures of the San Dieguito River Valley Park coastal wetlands. The Conservancy Society has volunteer opportunities suitable for all ages. The whole family can help raise money for the fight against cancer in the Relay for Life on Aug. 8 and Aug 9. Enter your “relay team” and enjoy a campout in the middle of civilization at the San Dieguito Academy campus in Encinitas.
Beyond the Fair
After the last remnants of the fair have been swept away, the Del Mar Racetrack offers weekend family fun. The track infield is filled with pony rides, face painting, magic shows, games, bounce houses and an obstacle course. Right across the street, Pelly’s Mini Golf’s two 18-hole courses offer all-day fun.
Shop ‘til You Drop (or until someone has a meltdown)
Shopping for back-to-school clothes and supplies is the reality check that summer won’t last forever. Boutique shops abound throughout Del Mar’s shopping centers, and the Carlsbad Premium Outlets are about 20 minutes away. Check the shopping center websites for current in-store specials.
Last Sunset of Summer Break
On that last evening before the first day of school, take the family, some dinner and settle in to your favorite beach. Soak in the kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, yellows, and blues as the sun sets on summer break.
