Super Foods for a Super You! 2

Beaming Brings Superfoods to San Diego

What is a superfood? According to Lisa Odenweller, the founder and visionary behind Beaming, a series of superfood cafes in San Diego and L.A.,  superfoods are “just that: a food that is SUPER. These power-packed gifts from earth are the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.”

Superfoods have nutritional superpowers; Odenweller shared some of her favorite superfoods and their remarkable nutritional properties. Her favorite superfood, turmeric, is a “gorgeous, ridiculously potent orange root [that] is powerfully anti-inflammatory and chock full of antioxidants, supporting healthy organs across the board, but the brain, heart and liver in particular.” Maca, a medicinal root from Peru, is great for “boosting energy naturally, smashing stress, amping up libido, and balancing hormones.” Algae, as it turns out, is much, much more than just fish food; various types of algae such as spirulina and chlorella have high amounts of chlorophyll. Algae “attracts and flushes out heavy metals from the body, making it a powerful tool for detoxification. It is also packed with easily digestible protein!”

So how do you actually incorporate these exotic new foods into your daily diet? Odenweller suggests keeping it simple by putting them in your morning smoothie. Toss your favorite fruits and vegetables (especially spinach and other leafy greens) into the blender, along with a base of hemp milk, almond milk or coconut water, then add your superfoods! In addition to Odenweller’s favorites listed above, you can also try hemp seeds for an extra protein punch, or cacao powder, which takes your smoothie to the next level with its chocolate flavor and powerful antioxidant content.

At her Beaming cafes, Odenweller creates a wide variety of smoothies, juices and foods that incorporate these superfoods and turn them into tasty culinary confections. Some of Beaming’s smoothies are specially formulated to address distinct health concerns, like the “Knocked Up” smoothie for expectant mothers, which contains omega-rich healthy fats like avocado and almond butter to foster healthy fetal brain development, and the “Rockstar,” a high-protein and anti-inflammatory smoothie with superfood greens for muscle recovery after a tough workout.

Beaming’s mission is “to inspire and empower people of all ages to experience greater health, happiness and vitality through the power of nutritious plant-based foods that taste amazing.” Odenweller is a firm believer in the Hippocrates’ “food is medicine” philosophy, and you can see this ethos reflected in every aspect of Beaming’s menu.

Lisa Odenweller believes that healthy food doesn’t have to be bland or boring. The Beaming team brings culinary skills and flair to their offerings; their dishes are a gorgeous explosion of color and flavor, and everything on the menu is gluten-free, plant-based, organic and GMO-free. Beaming offers a selection of soups, salads and entrees that changes daily, according to what produce is currently in season and in stock. At Beaming, Odenweller strives to ensure that “people of all ages can enjoy and feel the benefits of eating clean, plant-based foods without feeling like they’re sacrificing flavor.”

Odenweller opened the first Beaming location here in Del Mar in 2012, followed by three new locations in Los Angeles. Celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Reese Witherspoon and Ellie Goulding are fans, and have been spotted getting their smoothie fixes at Beaming’s LA locations! Beaming opened up a new location in La Jolla in September, and just announced plans to open their third San Diego location at the new Equinox gym in Carlsbad opening in late March. Odenweller says, “I am incredibly grateful for the community of San Diego, as their support is what has allowed me to grow Beaming and share my mission throughout Southern California and, hopefully, eventually nationally and internationally.”
For Lisa Odenweller, Beaming is not simply a cafe, it’s a message to the world about the importance of conscious eating, and “the best way I can inspire and share this message is by helping people discover how good you can feel when you feed your body well.”
