SDC Mercedes-Benz Dealers 
are KAABOO Presenting Partner

KAABOO Del Mar has announced Mercedes-Benz USA as the official 2016 presenting partner for the annual event. The Mercedes-Benz Dealers of San Diego County, who have four convenient locations in Carlsbad, El Cajon, Escondido and San Diego, have entered into a multi-year partnership with the three-day “mix-perience.” KAABOO Del Mar is a weekend escape, uniquely curated as a fully immersive live music experience without the rough qualities of a traditional outdoor event.


Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County (BBBS of SDC) has appointed a new CEO/President, S. Wayne Kay, following the retirement of CEO Deborah Condon, after her eight years of service to the local chapter. Wayne is an accomplished executive with over 30 years’ experience leading a wide range of organizations primarily focused in the healthcare and life science industry. He also has extensive not-for-profit executive and board leadership experience, with an emphasis on youth character and leadership development.

Friends of the Powerhouse Enhances Beach Amenities

For years, Friends of the Powerhouse (FOP) has quietly made a monumental impact on Del Mar’s beach amenities that are enjoyed by residents and visitors, and add revenue and pride to the city. FOP Board members, a Who’s Who of Del Mar, activate a passion for their community. They promote preservation, restoration and recreation in support of Del Mar landmarks and legendary lifeguards. The FOP raises money through events, unique naming opportunities and donations.

Art of Élan Returns to North County’s Lux Art Institute

Art of Élan brought its exciting and innovative one-hour concerts to North County audiences at the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas. The concert at Lux provided an opportunity to enjoy a rare San Diego appearance by Art of Élan co-founder, Demarre McGill. Currently a principal flutist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, McGill performed with friends as a special dual celebration of innovation in the arts in Southern California.

New Businesses Open in Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch

Lot’s of new activity at PHR Village! Crunch Fitness has been open for a few months but celebrated their official grand opening recently (see our Good Times for pictures). Verant Group’s venture north from Downtown SD, Westroot Tavern opened in late May and Luna Grill opened doors in June. Le Dimora, expanding from Rancho Santa Fe, is now open – award-winning owners Maria and Cindy offer elegant furniture and home accessories as well as full design services. And the newest member to the Village is Crudo by Pascal Lorange.

Del Mar extends moratorium on new short-term vacation rentals

With city staff needing more time to develop new regulations, the Del Mar City Council on May 16 voted unanimously to extend a moratorium on short-term vacation rentals. Under the temporary ban, current short-term rentals can stay in operation, but no new rentals can open. Although the existing code is unclear, a number of residences in Del Mar have been used as short-term rentals. The city plans to conduct at least two public workshops to gather more public input on possible regulations.

Summer construction planned at Canyon Crest Academy

A new two-story classroom building at Canyon Crest Academy is expected to begin construction this summer. The project will help complete the campus’ master plan and meet the continued growth in the south end of the school district and accommodate the natural demand for the high school. John Addleman, the district’s executive director of planning services, said the project is anticipated to begin the day after school lets out for the summer with a “mad rush” to be complete in a 12-month time frame.


The Old Globe announced the appointment of a new Director of Development. Llewellyn Crain joins the executive team to help implement the Globe’s strategic plan by leading and growing a comprehensive, modern, and sophisticated fundraising program to support the theatre’s 15 acclaimed annual productions and the wide variety of continually evolving and innovative arts engagement programs. She will oversee an 11-person development department that raises funds for The Old Globe.

Renovations at the Lodge at Torrey Pines

A $2.5 million renovation of the luxury resort’s casual restaurant The Grill was completed in time for a grand re-opening on June 13. Improvements include a redesigned patio with an outdoor wood-burning rotisserie and fire pits, redesigned seating areas, a revamped kitchen, and a menu overhaul being overseen by Executive Chef Jeff Jackson. The Grill has been a fixture at the property since 2002.

Gritty Girls Summer Series

Yoga, fitness and fun designed to build inner and outer strength, grace, and grit. Classes will be held at Graced by Grit on July 31, August 21, and September 25. Grades 1-3 meet from 2 p.m.-2.45 p.m. Grades 4-6 meet from 3.15 p.m.-4.15 p.m. Classes are taught by Erica Rood, M.A.Ed. of Inspire Balance: Family, Parent, and Teen Coaching and Sarah Andersen of Healthy Passionista.
