MiraCosta College Student-Athlete Earns Top Honors

MiraCosta College women’s volleyball standout Breanna Kirklen has been selected as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2015-16. Kirklen, 19, is the third MiraCostan to earn the recognition in the past four years. She prepped at The Classical Academy High School in Escondido before enrolling at MiraCosta College two years ago. As a freshman, she was third on the team with 121 kills. This past season, she was named to the PCAC All-Conference team as an honorable mention. While at The Classical Academy, she earned the CIF Sportsmanship Award in 2013.

Access Youth Academy 
hosts Tennis Fundraiser

Access Youth Academy, a non-profit dedicated to transforming the lives of underserved youths, hosted its first Annual Tennis Fundraiser at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club this spring. The event was a great success. Access makes a 12-year promise to students beginning in the 7th grade offering academic support, health and wellness guidance, leadership and social responsibility training through an after-school partnership with the Preuss School.

Oggi’s Sports, LaDainian 
Tomlinson Raise $32,000 For Community Programming

Oggi’s Sports | Brewhouse | Pizza teamed up with former San Diego Chargers great and future Hall of Famer, LaDainian Tomlinson, for the Inaugural Oggi’s LaDainian Tomlinson Celebrity Golf Tournament at Sycuan Golf Resort. The event raised a total of $32,000 to benefit Tomlinson’s Touching Lives Foundation. All event proceeds will be invested into the foundation’s Southern California programs, working to increase students’ success, providing support to our veterans, and helping to advance the awareness and treatment of Angelman syndrome, a neuro-genetic disorder that affects development, balance and speech. Oggi’s is also celebrating their 25th anniversary this month!

3rd Annual Solana Beach Day 
at Petco Park

Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce is organizing their 3rd Annual Solana Beach Community Day on Sunday, August 7, with a San Diego Padres vs. Philadelphia Phillies game at Petco Park. Discounted tickets are $20 for great seats along the 3rd baseline or $26 for the same seats AND a Padre Dog (Veggie Dog available too), plus a soft drink or water. Junior Ranchers Camp at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa’s enhanced summer camp for children is until August 27, every Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for children ages 5 – 12. Children begin their mornings with scavenger hunts, hike and discover Southern California’s critters, make a splash at the pool, hit the tennis courts, compete in Olympic games, stretch in Animal Yoga, and much more. Cost is $65 per child with lunch included.

San Diego Center for Children raises $360,000 at 129th 
Anniversary Celebration

The San Diego Center for Children welcomed more than 300 guests to its 129th Anniversary Celebration at The US Grant Hotel. The theme for the celebratory event was “Blues Thursday” and the Presenting Sponsor was SDG&E. Co-Chairs of the remarkably successful evening were Doreen Schonbrun and Gwynn Thomas, and Emcee was Bridget Naso of NBC. The event honored Jim Avery and Susie Sides with the presentation of the Center’s prestigious PATH Award – Partners in Achieving Transformation and Hope. The evening also recognized Karalina Brunetto, a remarkable youth served by the Center. With the generous contributions and support of the San Diego community, the evening raised $360,000 to benefit the thousands of children and families served by the Center this year.

New associate superintendent has special education focus

The San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) board appointed Mark Miller to replace Jason Viloria. SDUHSD Superintendent Rick Schmitt said they are lucky to bring such an accomplished administrator to the district, noting Miller is an “incredible find” that will help them work toward the continuing goal of improving special education. Miller is currently the assistant superintendent of special education services with the Capistrano Unified School District in Orange County. Prior to that he worked as the director of special education, director of alternative education and high school assistant principal with the Irvine Unified School District. Miller is actually returning to San Dieguito as he previously spent six years as a special education teacher at La Costa Canyon High School.

Colleen Duffy-Someck, co-owner of the Jimbo’s…Naturally! grocery chain, has written a natural foods cookbook Dancing in the Kitchen that also touches on her victory over an eating disorder. She struggled for 20 years with anorexia and bulimia. Recovering in her mid-30s, Colleen spent the next 20 years empowering women and teens to make healthy food and lifestyle choices based on what works best for their individual needs. The print book is now available at Jimbo’s…Naturally!
