Setting Pace

Running with Fleet Feet Sports

Carmel Valley’s newest sport and training store offers training programs and sports gear to get you moving this New Year! Fleet Feet Sports has weekly fitness classes and fun runs, helping you prepare for 5ks and marathons such as the upcoming Carmel Valley 5k and San Diego Half-Marathon.

“Our store is a great community resource to help guests become active and stay that way,” says owner Kevin Lachenmyer, a passionate athlete and healthy lifestyle believer. “We do custom fittings for shoes, insoles, and sports bras for women as well. Our team is highly trained, knowledgeable and enjoys helping our guests find support and relief in an appropriate way based on the recommendations made by our staff.”

Fleet Feet Sports offers everything from shoes and apparel to exercise recovery products – everything required for supporting an active lifestyle. They carry premium footwear and apparel brands, as well as several other brands of nutrition, hydration, massage, and injury prevention products. Common ailments addressed are Achilles tendonitis, bunions, neuromas, arthritis, diabetic concerns, and metatarsalgia.

“Have open conversations about what you want to get out of your workout/training,” says Lachenmyer, a cross-country runner and avid soccer player. “Don’t do it alone, join a support group. Be open about your goals so our team here can help you reach them. Our trainers help set up plans of attack for training, like setting the pace, workouts, etc. Other incentives to training include free yoga classes and having a nutritionist come in and speak about diet.”

Fleet Feet also offers two free fun runs a week that are open to all levels of runners. On Wednesday nights, they run a short run 3.5-mile route then go to happy hour at Westroot Tavern, located in the same shopping center as Fleet Feet Sports. On Saturday mornings, they run 10 miles, going out and back on the 56 bike path toward the ocean and returning with water stops along the way.

Marathon training groups begin 10-12 weeks prior to the race. If you are into hard-core training, you will train 2-3 times a week with a certified trainer. The training program coordinator at Fleet Feet is Brent Shirley, a Road Runners Club of America-certified running coach and 3-time Boston Marathon qualifier so you know you are in good hands.
