Fine Sugar Artistry

Petalsweet with Jacqueline Butler

Owner, artist and creative director behind Petalsweet, based in San Diego, Calif., Jacqueline Butler is a former wedding cake artist turned sugarcraft and cake decorating instructor. During her first career teaching and training in the non-profit sector, she discovered and fell in love with sugar flowers as a hobby. She traveled extensively to study with some of the best sugar flower makers in the business and began her own journey in cake soon after. Officially founded over 12 years ago, Petalsweet became one of Southern California’s favorite studios specializing in wedding cakes decorated with beautiful, modern and stylized sugar flowers. Known for clean, delicate designs and fresh color palettes, Petalsweet wedding cakes are enjoyed by fabulous brides in both San Diego and the Bay Area.

Five years into the business, other cake artists contacted Butler to learn her methods for making and finishing sugar flowers. After offering private lessons and group classes in Southern California and San Francisco, she discovered her love for teaching sugarcraft and began to focus more on providing learning opportunities for cake decorators and enthusiasts, from beginner to advanced levels. Over time, she developed easy to follow steps and processes, which have helped her students replicate beautiful sugar flowers with great success.

Today, Butler spends most of her time traveling and teaching her signature style of cake decorating and sugar flowers in schools and venues across the U.S., as well as overseas, including Australia, Europe and Asia. She has also partnered with Craftsy to produce two popular online videos featuring her favorite filler flowers, and with F + W Media International to author her first book Modern Sugar Flowers (April 2017).
