Local Pediatrician Dr. Angelo Del Re

To say that being a doctor comes naturally might seem like a slight to the years of schooling and practical learning that precedes a successful career in medicine. But it’s fair to say that the human side of treating patients is definitely organic for local pediatrician Dr. Angelo Del Re.

“I think that I just find ultimate happiness in making other people’s lives a little better,” says Del Re. “If I can teach a child to eat well, to care for their skin, to recognize a concussion and stay safe in sports, then I’ve succeeded. And if I can help my pediatric patients stay healthy and achieve a better quality of life, then I’ve done my job.”

Most of Del Re’s time is spent at Coast Pediatrics, a small office where children and families get the care they need and deserve. The award-winning Coast Pediatrics is located in Carmel Valley, and Del Re also spends time caring for sick and injured children at Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.

Describing the doctor’s work as full-time would be an understatement. After hours, he also volunteers at local elementary and high schools by educating students on general health, sun safety and skin care. His community work doesn’t stop there, as he can also be found giving informative lectures at local hospitals to new expecting couples.

“I often get asked why I went into the field of pediatric medicine,” he says. “The answer is simple: I enjoy relationships with families, and I enjoy watching kids grow up to be strong and healthy. It’s both humbling and gratifying to be with a family from day one of their child’s birth, to support them and guide them into childhood and adolescence. Knowing I am an integral part of a child’s life is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.”

Named one of San Diego County Medical Society’s Top Docs in both 2016 and 2017, Del Re continues to make an impact in our local community. His skills, however, were honed internationally. Del Re first experienced working with children more than a decade ago, at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, providing education on the importance of nutrition. Working with children in need proved to be his calling; he has since provided pediatric care in several far-flung locales, including rural Uganda, a refugee hospital in Haiti and mountain villages in Honduras.

“Whenever serving the less fortunate, I have always come away feeling as though I’ve received more than I’ve given,” says Del Re. “It’s amazing how little they have, and yet they are so content. It’s a joy and a privilege to give the gift of health and healing where it’s needed.”

When Del Re is not seeing children and families at his award-winning office or dedicating his time to volunteer work, he takes the time to enjoy his surroundings. An avid golfer and fisherman, he takes full advantage of San Diego’s great golf courses and fishing. And when simpler relaxation is on the menu, you’ll find Del Re walking along the beaches of Del Mar and Encinitas.
