Del Mar Lifestyle Magazine spoke with Dr. Merz on how to take care of your dental health.

The Benefits Of Orthodontics

When asked what the benefits of orthodontic treatment are, Dr. Merz said most people think its just esthetic, but there are health benefits as well.

“Maintain your healthy straight teeth by wearing your retainer at least one day a week after treatment, so you never have to have braces/Invisalign again! Also, keeping your teeth healthy and happy by brushing and flossing daily,” she says.

Start with Early Intervention

The most common procedures Dr. Merz performs is accelerated Invisalign for adults and very early growth and development procedures for children starting as early as age 4 to guide insufficient or excessive growth in the child.

“Early evaluation is important because the child is very flexible and treatment time can be reduced by less than half. Waiting until permanent teeth come in increases the treatment time with braces.

“Some 4-year-olds when they have narrow jaws can be widened, and that’s usually when the dentist will refer them to me. My former assistant wanted me to do early intervention with her kids because her teeth were so bad,” Dr. Merz says. “I did fix her teeth, but it isn’t the same as if started young. Her teeth are fine but had a lot of problems and wanted to have her kids get started right away. I started her child at age 4, and it was such an easy process and created this space for her teeth to grow in properly. I put expanders upper and lower when she had baby teeth. It took a few months to create that space and then she wore a night retainer. All of her adult teeth came in beautifully and came in faster and earlier because of the stimulation.”

Learning the Right Terms

Dr. Merz understands all aspects of aesthetics which go into creating a beautiful, lasting smile. Most of the time it’s not just the teeth; it has to do with bone structure, muscle, the health and esthetic of the gums and the individual teeth. Dr. Merz takes a comprehensive approach in advising the patient and always gives the optimum final result while giving them many different options.

“People hear terms like expander and think an expander is an expander is an expander. If you are going to the Indy 500, a race car is a race car. It’s not true; it has to do with the driver. Different drivers drive the car differently. Different orthodontists use the same product in different ways. That’s what I want people to know: braces aren’t braces; it has to do with the orthodontist and what they are doing with the appliance,” she says.

“We want to make sure our patients of all ages feel comfortable. That’s how we became the very best in San Diego.”
